Tamil-Swiss artist Pr iya Ragu returns to Australia this November for two headline shows\, landi ng at Powerhouse Parramatta in Sydney and The Night Cat in Melbourne.
< p style="text-align: center\;">Over the past five years\, Ragu has been carving out a sound that s eems to exist in several places at once. Her self-described Raguwavy moves through R&\;B\, hip-hop\, soul and electronic music\, threaded with th e folk rhythms\, melodies and instrumentation of her Tamil heritage. Tabla rhythms sit beneath low-slung basslines. Tamil melodies drift through war ped synths and warm\, analogue grooves. Her voice moves between the intima te and the ecstatic.
She first emerged with 2021'\;s damnshe stamil\, a mixtape that introduced the world to a singular new voice throu gh tracks including &lsquo\;Good Love 2.0&rsquo\; and &lsquo\;Chicken Lemo n Rice&rsquo\;. Its arrival brought a BBC Sound Poll nomination\, a show-s tealing appearance on Later&hellip\; with Jools Holland and a feature on J ungle'\;s Loving In Stereo\, placing Ragu in a musical conversation tha t stretched well beyond the confines of R&\;B.
Her 2023 debu t album SANTHOSAM\, Tamil for happiness\, opened that world further. Made alongside her brother and producer Japhna Gold\, the record slips between earthy soul\, disco\, hip-hop\, pop and Tamil instrumentation\, with songs that can feel simultaneously ancient and futuristic. There is a warmth to the record\, but also a sense of movement\, as if its rhythms are carryin g something forward.
That instinct has continued to pull Ragu t owards the edges of the dancefloor. In 2024\, she joined forces with Ahada dream and Skrillex for &lsquo\;TAKA&rsquo\;\, bringing South Asian rhythmi c traditions into the language of contemporary club music. The track becam e one of the year'\;s most sought-after IDs\, finding its way through D J sets and dancefloors before its official release. She has also collabora ted with Jungle and appeared on the soundtrack to Kalki 2898 AD.
Ragu first appeared on Australian stages as part of Astral People'\;s Spice Trail at Vivid LIVE in 2024. This November\, she returns to Sydney in a new setting\, Powerhouse Parramatta\, the major new cultural institut ion opening in Western Sydney\, and a show at The Night Cat in Melbourne.< /p>
Across her work\, Ragu keeps pulling different musical historie s into the same frame. Tamil folk music and London club culture. Soul reco rds and futuristic production. The sounds of family\, migration and memory alongside the physical pull of a bassline.
This November\, she brings that world back to Australia.
