CROWN RULER & MAGNETIC CITY PRESENT

SATURDAY 19 DECEMBER
THE NIGHT CAT - FITZROY, NAARM
9PM-3AM
JAMES ‘D-TRAIN’ WILLIAMS (US) + MONDO FREAKS (LIVE)
MARCELLUS PITTMAN (US)
DJ COLETTE B2B JIMI DAWG

One final dance for 2026.

Fresh from their appearances at Meredith Music Festival the weekend prior, Crown Ruler and Magnetic City bring an extraordinary gathering of musical talent to The Night Cat for a six-hour celebration of disco, boogie, soul and Detroit dance music.

James ‘D-Train’ Williams is one of the defining voices of New York's post-disco era. Alongside producer Hubert Eaves III, his recordings for Prelude Records helped shape the sound of boogie and laid foundations that continue to run through house, soul and electronic music today.

You're The One For Me, Keep On, Music, Walk On By — stone-cold classics that have never left the dancefloor. More than four decades on, these records remain as powerful and infectious as ever.

For his long-awaited Australian debut, D-Train joins forces with Melbourne's mighty Mondo Freaks, the eleven-piece funk and soul ensemble whose previous collaborations with Leroy Burgess and Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King have established them as trusted custodians of this extraordinary musical tradition. Together, they'll bring D-Train's catalogue to life in a full live performance.

From New York to Detroit, the evening continues with Marcellus Pittman, one of the most formidable DJs and producers to emerge from the Motor City. A founding member of the legendary Three Chairs alongside Theo Parrish, Moodymann and Rick Wilhite, Pittman's influence runs deep through underground house music. His productions for Sound Signature, FXHE and his own Unirhythm imprint are as raw, soulful and uncompromising as his approach behind the decks.

Few selectors possess his ability to move between low-slung house, deep disco, machine funk and unexpected musical territory with such instinct and authority. A genuine master of the craft and always a special occasion when he steps into the booth.

DJ Colette and Jimi Dawg round out the lineup, playing back-to-back for the first time.

Outside of High Times NYE, this marks Crown Ruler's final show of 2026. And we couldn't think of a better way to see out the year.

We acknowledge that this event will be held on Wurundjeri land of the Kulin Nation and recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
